——————————————————————

***APA CALL TO ACTION: Come to our January Meeting to participate in the APA Election of Officers. Saturday, January 5th. 4:00pm - 6:00pm. First United Church of Arvada 7195 Simms St. At thismeeting, we will elect a Leader/Co-Leaders of APA, a Secretary, and a Treasurer. We will also break into action teams to elect Action Team Leaders. You must be a registered APA member to nominate candidates, run for a position, participate in the discussion, and vote. You can become a registered APA member here: APA Registration. There will also be an opportunity to register at the sign-in table before the meeting.

If you know someone who is interested in running for leadership position, please do the following:

1. Nominate someone. You may nominate yourself. To nominate, send an email with the nominee's name to rachael.morrison@rocketmail.com or info@arvadansforprogressiveaction.org. You may nominate someone anytime between now and during the reorganization meeting.

2. If you have been nominated, accept the nomination and send a short bio. You might want to include: 1) How you've been involved in APA so far, 2) Why you want to take on a leadership role, and 3) Why you think you will be effective in that role. You can email your bio to rachael.morrison@rocketmail.com or info@arvadansforprogressiveaction.org.

3. If you have been nominated, prepare to share your bio with the group at the reorganization meeting. We will have 20 minutes total for bios, so depending on how many candidates we have, you will have 3-5 minutes.

4. At the meeting, we will share the nominations that we have received via email, and open additional nominations to the floor. We will then hear from nominees. If there is only one nominee for a position, then we will do a voice vote at this time. If there is more than one nominee for a position, then we will send a survey to the entire membership for a vote. Membership will have 1 week to complete the survey ballot.

Please let our leadership team know if you are interested in volunteering for one of the following positions.

APA Leader APA Co-Leader  APA Secretary APA Treasurer  APA Secretary/Treasurer
Education Team Leader  of Economy Team Leader Technology Team Leader Political Action Team Leader Environment Action Team Leader
Healthcare Action Team Leader Anti-War Action Team Leader Human Rights Action Team Leader Any other role you think of in which you take more responsibility

***ARVADA CALL TO ACTION: Contact City Council about organized trash and recycling. Please email me if you can make 1 3-minute public comment at a City Council meeting sometime this year. The amount of waste that we see from having 11 garbage companies drive around our city is mind blowing. And because these companies charge extra for recycling, Arvada only recycles about 13%. We can, and have to, do better. Please help City Council get to the right solution - if we had organized trash and recycling, each block would only have 2 trucks driving down it each week (one for trash and one for recycling), and recycling would be included in our rates. It’s time for the change. You can contact our city council members via email or calling. Find your City Council district here: http://maps.arvada.org/opendata/pdf/City_Council_Districts.pdf.

*** NATIONAL CALL TO ACTION: End U.S. support for the Saudi-led war in Yemen. If you want to know more of the background, read this article: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/03/opinion/american-troops-yemen.html. This paragraph sums it up well: “The Saudis’ brutal campaign in Yemen has created one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, with at least eight million people on the brink of famine, one million suspected of being infected with cholera and two million displaced from their homes. Legal and human rights experts say the killing of thousands of civilians and the humanitarian aid deprivations, most blamed on Saudi Arabia, could be war crimes in which the United States would be complicit.”

Call Senators Gardner and Bennett to sign on as co-sponsors to the Sanders/Lee/Murphy bill that would remove the US armed forces from Yemen, and to demand a floor vote this week.

   Cory Gardner - (303) 391-5777     Michael Bennet - (303) 455-7600

Please think about what new responsibilities you can take on as APA enters its 3rd year. Please let our leadership team know if you are interested in volunteering for one of the following positions.

APA Leader APA Co-Leader  APA Secretary APA Treasurer  APA Secretary/Treasurer

***JEFFCO CALL TO ACTION: Help Jeffcom 911 workers unionize. Call Jeffcom 911 Board of Directors and demand that they support their workers' right to collectively organize. (303) 980-7300.

SHOW UP - MONDAY: Arvada City Council Business Meeting. 6:00pm. 8101 Ralston Road. Business meetings are open to public comment. Next week, they are having workshops on organized trash and affordable housing. *** STATEWIDE CALL TO ACTION: Contact Jared Polis, incoming governor, to let him know that he hasn’t yet put together a transition team on the topic of immigration and immigrants’ rights. This is an oversight and we need our next governor to have intentional focus on this important issue. Email him at jared@jaredpolis.com. Polis is also hosting Tele Town halls *right now* so jump on one and bring this issue up https://boldlyforward.co/events/.

——————————————————————

*** NATIONAL CALL TO ACTION: Support reasonable immigration requirements. The Citizenship and Immigration Services Department is proposing a rule change that would require immigrants to be “self-sufficient,” and somehow prove that they would not require government assistance to live here. This will make our immigration process that much more onerous, and discriminate against the immigrants that need to move here most. Also, most newcomers can’t qualify for Medicaid or food stamps anyway, so this rule change is based on a false argument. Please submit a comment here by December 10th: https://www.regulations.gov/docket?D=USCIS-2010-0012 .
